Why are F1 engines called a power unit and not an engine?

You can call it an engine if you want. However, the official term in Formula 1 is power unit, because the system includes much more than just an engine.

At the center is the internal combustion engine (ICE)**, but several other components work together to produce power:

Turbocharger (TC) - Forces more air into the engine for extra performance.

Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic (MGU-K) - Recovers energy when the car brakes and that energy helps the car accelerate.

Energy Storage (ES) - The battery that stores the recovered energy.

Control Electronics (CE)- Manages the electrical systems and energy flow.

Because all these parts work together as a single system, Formula 1 calls it a power unit instead of just an engine. This term has been used since the introduction of hybrid technology in F1.

🏎️ In short: Every power unit contains an engine, but a power unit is much more than an engine.
